Just popping in to say HI and I have to figure out when I'm going to write things here now that I'm back to work and not home very much again.
I like my new gig. It's kinda crazy, and sort of intimidating, and holy heck I have a lot of names to learn and people to get to know. And it's a big, busy, beautiful library with so much going on, it makes me happy just to walk in the door. I'm managing a branch for Aurora Public Library -- Aurora is the 2nd biggest city in Illinois after Chicago, and it's wildly diverse, big and spread out, very urban-feeling in parts, and very suburban feeling in other parts. The particular branch and area I'm working in reminds me so much of Ypsi, I've been kind of homesick. I try very hard not to think about how much smaller my last library was in comparison, and instead focus on learning stuff and practicing good management skills.
The kids are handling the transition pretty well. Bel is in an afternoon kindergarten program now. The day care picks her up at noon and ferries her back to their building, where she has lunch and a nap and then learns Spanish and plays outside and generally has fun, from what she says. Otto isn't that crazy about the place (he gets picked up, too) -- he says it's loud, and they have bad snacks (veggies and dip? horrors!), and there are only one or two other kids near his age. But he's dealing well and looking forward to summer day camp with the park district. I'm proud of them both.
Even Charlie is doing nicely. He gets walked every day around noon by a professional dog walker, and I get an alert when his appointment begins and an email follow-up when it's done. According to his lovely walker they sometimes spend a lot of time sniffing in the grass, and other days he takes her on a brisk stroll to see the duck pond. When I get home he's happy to see me but not frantic, and that makes it well worth it.
Jon's still traveling a lot, and still walking/bike riding to work when he's in town. My first week back to work I think he was thrilled to finally have us all on HIS schedule. We're all up early and out of the house about the same time, and get home at the same time too. It's a big change from our former schedule-shifting and commuting, and there are some definite pluses to all being in the same groove.
Hope you're well, too. Happy spring!
