My Macbook's hard drive gave up the ghost on Friday.
So I'm typing slowly by thumbs on Jon's Kindle, which is trying. And did I mention slow?
When my Mac refused to boot, I downloaded the Apple store app to my phone and made an appointment for the Genius Bar. Now, people like to make fun of Apple, and they like to shudder with horror and say you'll be rooked out of far too much $$$ for service. But here's the thing -- they only do Apple products at the Apple store, and they do them well. In 15 minutes my Genius (who bore a disconcerting resemblance to Matt Bomer) had run diagnostics, recommended a fix, and given me the option to do the fix more cheaply myself by showing me what hardware to buy and recommending a non-Apple online store. And there was no charge.
So, my new and much larger hard drive is on its way, I found my OS disc, and I''ll spend some time restoring everything later this week. Kind of a pain, but I'm happy it's a relatively easy fix. I was running out of room anyway.
I have a tooth that' s slowly going bad, and nothing much to do about it but pop ibuprofen until my dentist's office opens on Wednesday. It's bearable as long as I don't breathe cold air, eat ice cream, drink coffee, crunch or chew things crunchy or chewy, etc. Again, kind of a pain. So after my Genius bar visit, I wandered the mall for a little while to give myself a break before trying not to breathe cold air on the hike back to my car.
I ended up in Sephora, oogling $60 tubes of anti-aging moisturizer with sunscreen. Evidently angry tooth + sad computer = expensive skin care. I'm now trying out a 30-day sample kit from Murad that's supposed to clarify, tone, exfoliate, and mattify my sadly middle-aged and hormonal complexion. Prettier than either a root canal or a hard drive swap. Cheaper, too.
Otto turns 8 soon. EIGHT. He climbed in my lap tonight and, despite all his angular boneyness, there' s a new heft to him. His chest is thicker, his shoulders broader. He's lean but not light, packing muscle on in his legs especially. He's sleeping more and can put away a couple of PB&Js at a time at lunch -- growth spurt stuff. Bel may be super tall for her age, but he's still a good head+ taller. He needs a new backpack and another 2 or 3 pairs of cargo pants plus some new sweats that don't show off his ankles.
In other words, THANK YOU cute Apple Store Genius guy for saving me a few bucks. Imma gonna need those bucks for other things.
