Round about this time of year, I get cabin fever.
And usually the answer to cabin fever is a weekend getaway. Often we head to Chicago, but this year we decided to go north, check out a small ski place, and see how Otto liked skiing. We picked Apple Mountain up in Saginaw because they have a class every Saturday morning for 4-6 year olds, called Apple Seeds. Cute!
We got up early yesterday, drove north, and got Otto and Jon geared up for the day. Annabel and I were in charge of taking pictures and video and watching the boys' gear. Next year we'll probably ski, too - there was a mom there with her almost-3 year old, and Annabel was most definitely interested in skiing. (Actually, she was interested in snowboarding. She kept trying to stand on other kids' boards and get them to move. Of course. I'm making her a t-shirt that says "fearless.")
Otto did pretty well in his class, and towards the end Jon sprung him from the teachers (who were uniformly great, most of them teens, all fun) and asked him if he wanted to ski together. Otto immediately headed towards the lift. Forget the tow rope! Forget the bunny hill! He was ready for the big time!
Somewhere in there we took a lunch break. Bel took a nap. The boys went down the mountain several times together, and at the end of the day Otto still wasn't ready to go home. He fell asleep before we were out of the parking lot, but wouldn't have admitted he was tired for the world.
And then we settled in at our hotel, ordered a pizza, and went swimming. The kids were a riot. I'm pretty sure a good time was had by all, though Jon and I are more tired now than when we started. Still, it was fun to see Otto and his dad together on the hill. We'll be doing it again!
